Village

New villagers are born, work hard and then die. The game holds a mirror up to life. Up to four generations of a family ply their trade in the village: players harvest crops, raise animals, produce wagons or ploughs. They sell goods, go into politics, find religion or travel across the land. Through all these activities the players gain influence, which helps them in their strategic struggle for fame – and can often save time. Without the right influence cubes the sand-timer of life flows more quickly. Whenever the time marker crosses the bridge into the hereafter, one of the oldest family members is either immortalised in the village chronicle or buried in an unmarked grave. The dynasty with the most fame points wins.

Reason for the jury’s decision

Typical village life is reflected in this unique board game. Above all, the way the theme of death is woven into the game is as innovative as it is unusual: each player’s figures belong to different generations, they are born and they die. The logical time mechanic follows the natural rhythm of life in this clearly and coherently constructed game, which invites players to try out various strategies for victory.
